KTI launches a Faculty of Energy Economics at the Corvinus University Print E-mail

alt

Since the transition the Hungarian energy sector has gone through some significant changes because of the market liberalization. From January 2003 the country's largest energy consumers were allowed to buy energy on the open market and shortly after that the gates opened for private participants as well. Because of the changes in the structure of the sector, actors need to adapt to new circumstances.

The Institute for Advanced Studies of Economics (KTI) at the Corvinus University of Budapest presented its newly launched postgraduate faculty in the frames of a press conference on the 17th of September. The specialisation starting in spring semester of the academic year 2009/2010, in the frames of which interested parties can obtain ’Energy economist and specialist’ qualifications.

For the first year opening with 30 seats in February one can sign up until the 31th of October. The education starts with basic economics and management studies after which the emphasis will be moved to the economic specificities of particular energetic sectors. The basic and methodological courses include such topics as the market structures, state regulations,  accounting and legal aspects of the energy sector. Among the specialisation subjects besides the renewable energy resources a closer examination of the environmental legislation, the electricity and gas sector economics will take place. The coworkers of the Hungarian Competition Authority and the Hungarian Energy Office cooperate in this initiative with the Corvinus University, moreover they undertake the management of some courses too.

Péter Pál Gáspár, director of Institute for Advanced Studies of Economics (KTI) said that the need for launching such a new faculty can be justified with the changing demands. It has always been important for the Corvinus University to keep the structure of the courses updated, and to convince professionals practicing on the field to participate in the training of the students. A milestone of the reformation is currently the launching of the Energy economist / specialist postgraduate faculty, where professors would want to pay attention to market changes and to studying environmental impact of the energy sector.

altDr Péter Kaderják,chairman of the faculty commission and leader of the Regional Centre for Energy Policy Research, said that they have recently recieved a number of requests from professionals to start a training about energy economy. The demand for training in energy related topics is not only high in Hungary but also in South-Eastern Europe and Central Europe, moreover professional trainings of a higher niveau hardly exist in this region. With the launch of a specialization for adults Corvinus University of Budapest can gain a leading position in training energy professionals.
